MK Chavez is a writer and a champion of public health. She writes about the world as it presents itself to her, broken and achingly luminous. She is the author of Virgin Eyes (Zeitgeist Press). Mothermorphosis will be released in March 2016 followed by her full-length collection Dear Animal, which will be available in the fall. Chavez is co-founder/co-curator of the Berkeley-based monthly reading series Lyrics & Dirges, and the co-director of the Berkeley Poetry Festival. She believes in literary confrontation and its capacity to an obliterate all forms of oppression. Recent and upcoming work can be found in Rivet, Aspasiology, and Eleven Eleven.

Writers Read happens on the last Thursday of most every month and has been happening in Ukiah since 1999.This reading series is sponsored in part by Poets & Writers, through a grant from the James Irvine Foundation; additional support provided by Art Center Ukiah, the Poet Laureate Committee of Ukiah, an anonymous local writer, and donations.

Arbor Day Poetry Tree - Ukiah CA

Arbor Day Celebration — Youth Poetry Contest
DEADLINE: SUNDAY, MAY 1, 2016
Ukiah, California

Arbor Day is celebrated all over the world on April 29th. On Sunday, May 1st the Tree Advisory Group will be holding a poetry writing contest for youth ages 5 to 18.

Poems Due:
An in-person submission of a single poem will be accepted Sunday, May 1st between 1-3 pm. Bring your poem about a tree to the information table that will be located at the City of Ukiah Civic Center Grounds near the old oak tree at 300 Seminary Avenue.

Contest Rules: 
Ages 5-11 and 12-18 category
Submit one poem per person on a single sheet of paper include name, age, address, and telephone number. First prize awarded to a winner from each age category, winners will be contacted by phone.

Nine categories, two in Spanish, are reserved for poets from Mendocino, Lake, Humboldt, and Sonoma counties with divisions by age and topic. The Jane Reichhold International Prize category is open to poets from around the world and offers cash prizes. The Poet Laureate Committee of Ukiah announces a Call for Nominations for a new Poet Laureate of Ukiah for the 2016–2018 Term

Deadline: Saturday, April 30, 2016

Who is eligible to serve as Poet Laureate of Ukiah: Any adult who lives within the Ukiah Unified School District, and is an active published poet.
Selection Criteria: Prospective Poets Laureate will be evaluated based on the demonstrated skill of their craft, their publishing credits, experience presenting poetry in public, and experience in community work.
Selection Process: Members of the public are invited to send nominations for prospective Poets Laureate to P.O. Box 865, Ukiah, CA 95482 or email to bookem@pacific.net. The Poet Laureate committee will contact the nominees to request a representative sample of their work, a brief list of their recent publications, and a short statement regarding what they would like to accomplish as Poet Laureate. The committee will then screen the nominees and invite the most qualified for an interview. Based on the materials submitted, and the interview, the committee will recommend a new Poet Laureate for the Ukiah City Council’s approval.
